At Chubby Diaries we want you to be up to date with potential health risk while traveling. So recently we got interview a really good friend of mine, Dr. Nadeen White. Dr Nadeen is Quotably known as “A Blogger by Day, Physician by Night.”

We asked her 5 questions that should give us all a brief insight into the infection and she also wanted me to let you all know that the information changes so quickly!

1. First off what is the Coronavirus and what some of the early signs of it?

Coronavirus is a category of respiratory viruses that have been around for a long time. The novel/new Coronavirus AKA COVID-19 was first discovered in humans in Wuhan China in December 2019.

Like other Coronaviruses it can cause symptoms of the common cold and flu like symptoms. But, about 20% of people have serious infections that can lead to lung or kidney failure and a smaller percentage of about 3% have died from it.

2. How can one prevent or protect themselves from getting sick?

Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20-30 seconds. The use of hand sanitizers. Try to avoid touching your face especially around your mouth and nose.

Use disinfectant wipes to clean areas on airplanes, hotel rooms, cruise ships.

Avoid being around anyone who is sick.

3. Is it safe to travel internationally or specifically East/Southeast Asian Countries?

Nonessential travel to China and South Korea are not recommended. Cruises in Asia are not currently recommended. Two great resources for information on travel warnings to countries affected by the virus are the CDC and the US Department of State.

For travel to places with known clusters of cases such as Northern Italy, I would reconsider travel plans especially if you have a chronic illness such as Asthma or if you are immunocompromised.

4. If you are in another country, what should you do if you happen to get infected?

Seek medical care at a clinic or hospital. Let them know if you have traveled to any of the countries or area affected by Coronavirus.

5. Are there any treatments or cures?

There is currently no treatment or specific medications available for it partly because it is brand new in humans. Researchers are trying to learn more about it. The “treatment’ is supportive care such as oxygen, medications for pneumonia and fever and IV fluids for dehydration.
